How do you know that you need data recovery?
If your computer stops booting or your system can't find important data or files, data recovery may be right for you. It is very difficult to determine what is the cause of data loss whether it be electrical/mechanical failure, computer viruses, lightening, etc. Most of the time the automatic tools that come with windows 95/98 (or other operating systems)provided for system clean up and maintenance do more harm than good. It is not a question of how it happened but rather how important is the lost data. Good backups are the key to safeguarding your data. However if you don't have good backups and important files are damaged, lost or unreadable, then those same clean up and maintenance tools become your enemy. Contact us before attempting to use these tools as they can destroy the very data your are looking for.The process of Data Recovery is basically one of diagnosis, repair, mirroring and rebuilding. The reasons that disks fail tend to fall into 2 board categories, hardware failure (including head crash) or software failure which includes loss of disk information (boot record, FAT, directory structure), viral attack, accidentally erased files and bad sector information. We separate the drives into these broad categories and create an estimate based on our experience of these different kinds of failures. In the case of a head crash, the disk surface is usually damaged. Tracks damaged in this manner present significant challenges. We have had excellent results retrieving data from damaged disks because we don't give up without a fight. We maintain a large stock of replacement heads and keep replacing them (under clean room conditions) until we get a good read. Unfortunately, any data stored directly on the damaged surface is unreadable. Once we have a good mirror of your drive we rebuild the boot record, FAT tables, directory structures and files. This process can be short or long depending on the degree of fragmentation of the drive. Recovered data is then written to CDROM. We maintain the mirrored image of your drive for two weeks in case the recovery process missed an important file as a result of fragmentation. If necessary, we will go back and search for individual sectors.
How to send your drive. Call us to let us know you are sending the drive or email the tracking number and your information as below.
Pack your hard disk drive in an anti-static bag (if you don't have one wrap the drive in aluminum foil) in a box with at least 2 inches of padding all around. An original drive box is best. Styrofoam "Peanuts" can't be used as they allow the drive to shift inside the box. Make sure to include your name, company name, address, phone (day and night), fax and any information about the drive that will help us retrieve your data such as operating system, partitions, important data file types and names. Then send your drive via a traceable carrier to our mailing address. If you are in the New York metropolitan area, we can pick up the drive for you for an additional non-refundable service charge.
Charges are based on the amount of time it takes to recover your data and parts used. We have a large stock of spare parts so that when we get the OK we can get started on your drive right away. Parts used in the repair of your drive are added to the recovery fee. We will return the data either on the original drive if it is in working order or on the media of your choice, CDROM, DAT Tape, Zip Disk, Traven Tape...or a new drive³.
